Meet our session 1 and 2 speakers! Landscape of a PhD : from student to employee

Our workshop, Landscape of a PhD : from student to employee is starting very soon. Let's meet our lovely speakers for session 1 and 2:

Session 1 Thesis Write-Up: Dos and Don’ts:

Dr Joaquin Carrasco

Born in Abarán, Spain, in 1978, Dr Carrasco received the B.S. degree in Physics and the Ph. D. degree in Control Engineering from the University of Murcia, Spain, in 2004 and 2009, respectively.

Dr Carrasco is currently a reader in control systems in the department of electric electrical engineering in the University of Manchester. His research interests include absolute stability, robotics application, teleoperation, PLL control issues related with HVDC, IQC theory, Passivity theory and Multiplier theory.

Dr Fang Liu

Currently working as a PDRA in Prof Simon Rowland's group in the University of Manchester, Dr Liu's current research area revolves around solid insulation in high voltage networks. Dr Liu received her bachelors in Tianjin Chengjian University and masters degree in TianJin University in China before coming to the University of Manchester in 2017 to start her PhD. As a recent graduate, Dr Liu will be giving tips on thesis writing from a students perspective.

Session 2 Surviving your Viva:

Prof Patrick Gaydecki

Currently a Professor of Digital Signal Processing (DSP) in the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and Head of the Materials, Devices and Systems Division, Prof Gaydecki (FIET, FInstP, SMIEEE, CPhys, CEng) develops systems and software in the fields of audio-based digital signal processing, imaging, insect tracking, ultrasonic and eddy current nondestructive testing, biomedical instrumentation, wearable technology and wireless instrumentation.

He has authored a book on DSP and has published over 200 journal and conference papers. His research has been funded by EPSRC, the DTI, the BHA, ESRC, MIMIT, TWI, The HA, and many industrial sponsors. He is the inventor and co-founder of Signal Wizard Systems Ltd, commercial real-time DSP products for signal enhancement, which have been purchased by many international organizations including The US Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command (SPAWAR), US Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, Pure Technologies Canada, Defence Research and Development, Canada, Disney, US Government agencies, University of Cambridge and others. The biomedical signal processing work has been conducted in collaboration with the Manchester Heart Centre (MHC) at the Manchester Royal Infirmary (MRI), Hope Hospital neonatal unit, the University’s own Centre for Rehabilitation Science, the Department of Physiotherapy at the MRI and the Newborn Intensive Care Unit, St Mary's Hospital, Manchester.

Dr Jelena Ponocko

Dr Jelena Ponocko is a Lecturer in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at The University of Manchester, UK. Her research focuses on assessing demand-side flexibility and the effects of demand-side management on power network performance. Jelena has authored or co-authored over 40 research papers and technical reports. She has been an active IEEE PES member since 2015. Dr Ponocko is the IEEE Power and Energy Society Women in Power Representative for Region 8 (Europe, Middle East and Africa).
