Meet our session 3 speakers! Landscape of a PhD : from student to employee

Our workshop, Landscape of a PhD : from student to employee is starting very soon. Let's meet our wonderful speakers for session 3: Research or Industry a discussion circle.

Dr Hasti Jahangiri

Hasti’s education covers a broad range of areas including organic chemistry, physical chemistry, and applying electrical engineering to a materials field. During the final year of her Bachelor’s, she studied the synthesis and feasibility of using coronenes within OLED screen technology. In her doctorate, Hasti investigated the Ageing and Failure mechanisms of electrical systems to be used on-board the first hybrid electric commercial aircraft, the E-fan X. During her Ph.D. Hasti gave presentations at standards agency conferences and both presented at and submitted articles to academic conferences and colloquiums internationally. In her final year Hasti spent two months at Tokushima University in Japan investigating the presence of partial discharges in high voltage cabling typically used on high-speed maglev trains.

Following the completion of her Ph.D., Hasti worked as a material scientist at an engineering consultancy, aerospaceHV, who specialised in high voltage testing of systems in the aerospace, automotive and materials sectors. Hasti Jahangiri has since joined Wilson Gunn and is training to qualify as a Chartered and European Patent Attorney.

Dr Iñaki Erazo

Dr Erazo is currently working as an electrical engineer in Schlumberger SHTC. He received his bachelors degree in Mechatronics engineering from the National University Autonomous of Mexico before studying in the University of Manchester for his MPhil and Ph.D. in Electrical and Electronics Engineering. During his PhD his main research areas were design, construction, simulation, commissioning, control and testing of a 45 kVA test rig simulating a wind-diesel microgrid. Dr Erazo has also researched hybrid power systems using a rotor wound induction machines. After graduating, Dr Erazo worked as an experimental officer in the university before joining his current role in Schlumberger.

Dr Vidyadhar Peesapati

Currently a senior lecturer in the University of Manchester, Dr Peesapati first attained his bachelors degree in the University of Madras. Followed by an MSc in Electrical Power Engineering Viddy completed a PhD in Electrical Materials in the University of Manchester.

Before becoming a senior lecturer, Dr Peesapati worked as a Knowledge Transfer Research Fellow. Viddy's current research interests lie in high voltage and electrical power engineering and its involvement in future energy issues. His current role is to respond to real-world industry problems, and provide rapid support and solutions using ‘non–routine’ high voltage testing, simulations and consulting that leverage my expertise and research facilities available within the University.

Dr Paul Coffey

Dr Coffey is currently working as an experimental officer in FSE in the University of Manchester. He received his Bachelors in Physics and Computational Physics from the University before completing an industrial PhD there. His main focus during that time was building Analytical Instruments for Biological Applications. Paul has since worked on projects with Airbus, NNL, Sellafield and AstraZeneca.

Dr Loizos Louizou

Dr Loizos Loizou is a holder of Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the University of Manchester with emphasis on Sustainability and Power Engineering. During his BEng studies he was mostly focused on power systems engineering but also participated in numerous electronics projects which involved both hardware and software development solutions.

For his PhD studies, he received the prestigious iCASE (Industrial Cooperative Awards in Science & Technology) scholarship which involved various collaborations with industrial partners in the United Kingdom and more specifically National Grid, 3M Science and HVPD. At the University of Manchester, his research was mainly focused on the fields of high voltage engineering and the condition monitoring and diagnostics of insulation mediums used in substation power network assets such as transformers, gas insulated switchgear, busbars and lines.

He left the University of Manchester in September 2020 to join the Research Centre for Sustainable Energy – FOSS of the University of Cyprus as a postdoctoral researcher where his research was focused on the fields of renewable energy and smart grid technologies and the integration of distributed energy resources in the power grid. Following that, he was a Consultant for a year on Renewable Energy and Electricity Market projects.

Dr Loizos Loizou is now an Intelligence Executive in Philips Morris International in Cyprus where he is in charge of the Business Intelligence, Reporting and Data Analytics in the Commercial area of the company.
